De Grendel is proud to announce that we received 2 amazing awards from the 2018 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show that took place this week. The De Grendel Amandelboord Pinotage 2016 won the Best Pinotage Trophy while the De Grendel Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc 2017 won a Gold medal. De Grendel placed second in the competition overall.
Life can sometimes throw you a curveball, but often, the challenge isn’t as daunting as it initially seems, and can pleasantly surprise you. This turned out to be the case with De Grendel’s 2018 harvest. Having entered one of the worst droughts in Cape Town’s, De Grendel experienced an amazing crop that was 35% bigger than last year, due to supplementary irrigation in critical times. “The rest of the industry is down by 30 to 40% due to the tremendous drought in the Western Cape,” explains cellar master, Charles Hopkins. Supplementary irrigation is the irrigation of crops only when necessary.

De Grendel toasts the arrival of autumn with the release of Three Spades Cider, acknowledging the Graaff family's close connection to apple farming. The premium cider is made in limited quantities with freshly pressed apples from Elgin, one of South Africa's foremost apple growing regions.
"Apples have been part of our country's agricultural heritage for as long as growing grapes and wine-making," says Sir De Villiers Graaff, owner of De Grendel wine farm. "It holds special significance for the Graaff family to honour both traditions."

2017 was a busy but incredibly successful year at De Grendel, and we are extremely proud of our farm’s resilience as the Cape Town drought and water restrictions escalated.
The release of the Sir David Graaff First Baronet of Cape Town wine
2017 started off with a proud new wine release that was inspired by, and honours, Sir David Graaff (1st Baronet), who went from being a poor shepherd boy in Villiersdorp to First Baronet of Cape Town. Sir David Graaff was an extraordinary man and each of the 3 344 numbered bottles Sir David Graaff, First Baronet of Cape Town 2013 carries his signature, the quality of the wine reflecting his high values.

We once again walked away with a host of wine awards
De Grendel was once again proud to receive a host of awards, further emphasizing our consistent quality and standard of winemaking. Included in our awards were 18 Veritas including two gold, two Michelangelo awards, three awards at the China Wine and Spirits Awards, and a Best-Performing Chardonnay under £20 at the Drinks Business Global Chardonnay Masters 2016. We are exceptionally proud of how well our wines did in 2017.
Our restaurant received two excellent awards
The World Luxury Restaurant Awards and TripAdvisor awarded the De Grendel Restaurant the Continent Winner of the Luxury Scenic Setting Award and the Regional Winner of the Fine Dining Cuisine Category, and a Certificate of Excellence respectively. With an exquisite view of Table Mountain, and a host of prestigious awards, De Grendel Restaurant was a great reason to love 2017.
Reverse osmosis to beat the water shortage
De Grendel decided to go one step further during the terrible Cape Town drought and investigate the option of reverse osmosis on the farm. Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a water treatment process that removes contaminants from water by using pressure to force water molecules through a semipermeable membrane. We are excited to be able to assist the City of Cape Town with efforts to save as much water as possible.
