De Grendel wines has brought home a trophy and a gold award from the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards 2017. The De Grendel Rubaiyat 2013 was awarded the Tonnelerie de Mercurey French Style Red Blend trophy, one of only 21 trophies awarded to the 1 633 entries. Our De Grendel Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc 2017 also won gold.
“It is heartwarming to receive a trophy for our De Grendel Rubaiyat as the category with the most entries was the one for red blends, which included Bordeaux style blends as well as Cape Blends,” says Sir De Villiers Graaff, 4th Baronet.
The De Grendel Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc 2017 was also judged in a highly competitive category. The most entries received for white wines was for Sauvignon Blanc, which received 176 entries, and only ten gold medals were awarded, one of which went to De Grendel.
Our winning wines will now carry stickers acknowledging the awards. “Using various experts in the field of digital marketing, Michelangelo has embarked on a ground-breaking project that – as far we know – is a world first,” says Lorraine Immelman, founder and CEO of the Michelangelo Awards.
“From this year the coveted Michelangelo awards stickers will carry a QR code. Once scanned on the smartphone of the retail, restaurant or hotel customer, the code will allow access to succinct and varied information on the product, including tasting notes and a guide as to where the specific product can be purchased and/or ordered,” she says.
All wines were judged blind according to the international 100-point system.
The fact that De Grendel took home three prestigious awards at the China Wine and Spirits Awards (CWSA) was made even more exciting in that it happened during a huge typhoon that braced Hong Kong. The “whirlwind” event saw De Grendel taking home Gold awards for De Grendel Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc 2017, De Grendel Op Die Berg Chardonnay 2016 and De Grendel Shiraz 2015.
Long renowned internationally as the biggest and most prestigious wine and spirits competition in China, CWSA Judges are the most powerful buyers in China. Wine is serious business in China. CWSA Judges want to be the first to taste the newest offerings from producers around the world so they are the first to buy what CWSA Results announce. CWSA 2017 was the biggest on record with an excess of 5,000 samples from 55 countries around the world.“It is very encouraging to receive these accolades and have the opportunity to reach more wine lovers in China. It is particularly exciting to note that our Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay received Gold awards as this is a particularly competitive class of wines,” says Sir De Villiers Graaff

The 2016 Shiraz vintage from De Grendel is literally a “tale of three blocks”, explains cellarmaster Charles Hopkins. This is because the grapes sourced for the 2016 Shiraz were sourced from a selection of established blocks from which Charles has been buying grapes from for 14 years – one in Paarl and the other two from a vineyard in the Somerset West region.
As we do each season, we have introduced a string of new delicious dishes to the menu of De Grendel Restaurant. Our new sous chef, Conrad van den Heever, who joins our head chef, Ian Bergh, has brought innovative ideas and passion with him, contributing to the exciting things going on in our kitchen right now.

We’re so grateful to be receiving consistent rainfall at last in the Durbanville Wine Valley, but the warnings are out for a hotter & drier summer than ever ahead. While at De Grendel we water our vines using reclaimed grey water supplied by the City of Cape Town, we decided we needed to explore other options to service the needs of our estate, including our blueberry crop.
