The winners of the Rosé Rocks! 2018 have recently been announced, with De Grendel Rosé proudly winning a Double Gold award.
Rosé Rocks! is South Africa’s first dedicated rosé wine competition which seeks to recognise excellence in rosé winemaking and promote the SA Rosé category. Rosé is one of the fastest growing categories of wine in South Africa and internationally. In South Africa alone, sales have grown annually in double digits in the last few years.
Allan Mullins, the Rosé Rocks! Panel chair, explains, “The Rosé Rocks! competition continues to go from strength to strength with very high quality entries this year which reflect the increasing skill and attention South African winemakers are applying to this growing category. The trend continues to favour the drier styles with soft floral notes and a pale onion skin appearance. I can confidently say that South African rosé wines compare to the best that the French, Spanish or any other producing nation have to offer.”
De Grendel entered its Rosé 2018, which is a beautifully striking wine, resembling the ‘eye of the partridge’ in colour, and offers a combination of coppery pink hues and a deeper reddish blush. Our Rosé is exceptionally floral and perfumed on the nose with enticingly sweet nuances of lemon and lime carried out of the glass by wafts of Turkish delight and candy floss. The sweet delight on the nose precedes a dry entry that bursts into juicy strawberry preserve layered with hints of jellybeans and caramel – a dry, perfumed and fruity rosé that is perfect for easy sipping on a sweltering day.
“We are incredibly proud to have walked away with a Double Gold award from a competition that honours such a unique wine category in South Africa,” says De Grendel Cellar Master Charles Hopkins. “De Grendel has been producing rosé for over 10 years and the 2018 vintage is one of my personal favourites.”
