Master Award for our Op Die Berg Chardonnay 2019
Share
Our Op Die Berg Chardonnay 2019 received an incredible Master Award at the Global Chardonnay Masters in 2019. The title of Master is only awarded to "exceptional examples". In 2019 our Op Die Berg Chardonnay 2019 also received 90 points in Cape Town at the Winemag Chardonnay Report.
High on the Witzenberg Mountain range in Ceres, at an altitude of 960 meters above sea level, the unique Op Die Berg ‘appellation’ exhibits South Africa’s only truly continental climate with winter temperatures frequently dropping below freezing. Ceres fruit displays surprising cooler climate characteristics in comparison to other regions of the Western Cape.

"Among other areas that stood out, it should be stressed that once more, South Africa proved itself a great place for first-rate Chardonnay at an accessible price. Particularly the wines from De Grendel, who have crafted a lovely and affordable Chardonnay from the Ceres Plateau in the Witzenburg Mountains – one of the highest wine regions in the country."
Op Die Berg Chardonnay Food Pairing Suggestions
The Op Die Berg Chardonnay is exceptionally well-suited to creamy pastas and grapefruit salads. The freshness of the wine also makes it ideal for mild, aromatic curries. Although perfect to enjoy now, this wine has the potential to age and develop for 10 years.
About The Global Chardonnay Masters
The Global Masters tastings identify the best examples of its grape variety, from all around the world and from every price bracket. The Global Masters are judged blind and have been honored to have some of the finest palates in the world acting as their judges. The panel consists solely of Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers and senior buyers.
The best competing wines are awarded medals, ranging from Bronze to gold and, for exceptional example, the title of Master. Year on year, the success of their Masters series has grown, with hundreds of wines vying to become the Master in their category.
Although The Global Masters was only launched in 2013, the tasting competition, encompassing styles from rosé to sparkling, and varieties such as Chardonnay and Syrah, has become the biggest awards program by the drinks business, the world's leading magazine for the wine and spirits trade.
